AKG C214

Large-diaphragm condensers are well-known for their ability to capture finer details in recordings. We've looked at a lot of wonderful options in the past, and we've always praised AKG Microphones.

While most of us prefer the C414 for vocal capture, the AKG C214 has a lot of merit as well. The C414 has been a popular condenser mic for singing for a long time, but the C214 is a better all-arounder.

One of the best things about the C214 is how well it works with guitars. When trying to'mic-up' a cab, the C414 can be a touch too sensitive and temperamental. With this duty, the C214 has the upper hand. It also produces a punchier sound, making it an excellent choice for miking your electric guitar. That's not to imply it should solely be used for your axe; the fact that it can record vocals is a given.

The design of this cardioid pick-up microphone is excellent. It has a retro design that appeals to the eye, and it's also quite sturdy for such a low price.

An all-metal body completes the structure, allowing you to travel with it. To keep it tough, the grille is double-meshed. Radio frequency interference is avoided thanks to the die-cast body. It is also scratch and impact resistant.

Originally, this model was intended to be a less expensive alternative to the popular C414 B-XLS. When it comes to the internal components, it's safe to assume that it's built in a similar way. It has the same one-inch, edge-terminated dual-capsule as the AKG C414, but with a single diaphragm.

It also features a 143dB dynamic range, which results in an outstanding transient response. When it comes to capturing detail, these qualities provide it the same advantages as the more expensive microphone.

The self-noise is really low, as it should be with a larger diaphragm, and there is plenty of headroom. It can withstand higher sound pressure levels of up to 136. A plus 20-decibel pad switch is also included.

This allows you to reduce the gain where necessary, bringing the SPL handling up to 156dB, which is ideal for loud instruments like drums. It also allows you to unwind if you're playing a very hot guitar or using a lot of heavy effects.

This model also includes a bass roll-off switch to eliminate low-end rumbles and minimise background noise from ruining your recording. At 160Hz, the roll-off is minimised, allowing you to mic a cab closer to it or place it near the floor without transferring vibrations.

20-20000Hz is the frequency response range. From 60 to 1000Hz, the curve flattens out and dips somewhat between 1000 and 2500Hz. It then rises and curves higher from that point. This gives the sound more realistic low-ends and a stronger presence for your vocals while also preventing ear-splitting guitars.

This microphone comes with a durable and travel-friendly storage box to keep it safe. A high-quality H85 shock-mount and a W214 windscreen are included with the case, providing even more value to its already low price.

PROS

  • Built to last.
  • The look is retro.
  • Diaphragm is large and sensitive.
  • Capsule with a diameter of one inch.
  • Astonishing dynamic response.
  • Outstanding transient reaction.
  • Self-noise is low.
  • SPL handling at a high level
  • Filter pad with a 20-decibel threshold.
  • Roll-off filter for bass.
  • Sound with a lot of punch and a lot of vocal presence.
  • Shock mount, windscreen, and protective storage bag are included.
  • Reasonably priced.

CONS

  • Because of the flattening of the low-end frequency response curve, it can't be used for bass guitar capture like a guitar.

Why Do We Love It?

Studio recording can be costly, especially if you need many microphones for different processes and purposes. The AKG C214 is a terrific budget-friendly middle-ground mic that offers exceptional versatility.

It has a lot of the same technology and parts as the more expensive ones. It's also built to last, and it comes with some nice additional accessories.
